This program is designed to prepare men and women for careers as licensed cosmetologists. Upon satisfactory completion of all cosmetology courses, students may qualify to take the California State Board of Cosmetology licensure examination. It requires the student to make an appointment with the manager of one of the private beauty colleges, with which the college has a training contract, for
an orientation.

Admission to this college is opened for applicants possessing a high school diploma or the equivalent or any individual who is at least 18 years of age and capable of profiting from the instruction. International students with a TOEFL score of less than 475 paper-based, 153 computer-based, or 53 internet-based are required to take the Allan Hancock College English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment test for placement into the appropriate ESL classes before registering for classes. And those who with a score of 475 paper-based (153 computer-based) or higher on the TOEFL are required to take the Allan Hancock College START test for English placement.

Allan Hancock College was founded in 1920 when the Santa Maria High School District established Santa Maria Junior College. It is a community college which has campuses in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Solvang, and at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
