Uraian Tempat

Southern Illinois University, chartered in 1869, began instruction in 1874 in Carbondale offering a two-year program in teacher training. By 1904 students were able to earn four-year bachelor’s degrees. In the 1930s, the two-year teaching programs were discontinued; in 1943, the first graduate coursework was offered. The school’s changing mission was recognized in 1947 when the state legislature renamed the institution Southern Illinois University. In 1970, SIU’s original Carbondale campus was separated administratively from its satellite campus in Edwardsville. The original campus, known as Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), includes the School of Medicine in Springfield and the School of Law in Carbondale. In addition to pursuing statewide goals and priorities, SIUC: strives to develop the professional, social and leadership skills expected of college students; develops partnerships with communities, businesses and other colleges and universities; cultivates and sustains a commitment in research and instruction related to the region’s natural resources and environment; strives to meet the health care needs of central and Southern Illinois; cultivates and sustains diversity through a commitment to multiculturalism.

SIUC has three residential living areas offering a variety of services and conveniences: air conditioning, cable television, local telephone service, postal service, computer labs with Internet access, and several dining locations. The standard room and board contract offers nineteen meals per week. The on-campus residence halls at SIUC are organized into four living areas: Brush Tower, Thompson Point, University Park, and University Hall. Each area has a commons building where meals, postal, and administrative services are provided. All rooms are furnished with single beds, closet space, chests of drawers, desks, study chairs, and draperies. Telephone jacks and cable television outlets are provided in each room. Personal items, such as bed linens and towels, must be provided by student. Specific Residence Halls, Wakeland and Kaplan Hall, are designated for single graduate and professional students. Each hall provides basic room furnishings, kitchen facilities, and lounge areas. Food contracts are optional. Southern Hills has one-bedroom and two-bedroom furnished apartments and furnished efficiencies. Elizabeth Apartments also offers furnished efficiencies. Efficiency consists of one room with combined living and kitchen facilities. It does not have a separate bedroom. SIUC operates two apartment complexes for married students and students with families at Southern Hills and Evergreen Terrace. Southern Hills has one-bedroom and two-bedroom furnished apartments. Evergreen Terrace has two-bedroom and three-bedroom unfurnished apartments. Prices range from $400-500 per month depending on the number of rooms in apart¬ment. There are many off-campus apartments, housing, and residence halls available in Carbondale and nearby communities.
