This program offers majors and minors the opportunity to pursue either a general program of study, termed classical civilization, or one of several specialized subject concentrations, including ancient Greek language and literature, Latin language and literature, classical languages and literature, ancient history, and Mediterranean archaeology. The department also administers programs in Judaic studies and religious studies.

Modul program

The following are the modules: Required Courses: Greek or Latin language through the 200 level (GR 101, GR 102, GR 201, GR 202; OR LAT 101, LAT 102, LAT 201, LAT 202), One course in each of the following three areas: Roman archaeology, Greek archaeology, Near East/Egypt archaeology, One course in the method, history, or theory of archaeology or an approved field program, Two courses in the archaeology of a non-Mediterranean culture, Three courses in the archaeology, history, art, and/or literature of a single ancient Mediterranean culture.

The University at Buffalo Department of Classics, which is the only department of Classics in the State University of New York system, has 12 full-time faculty, ca. 30-35 graduate students, and ca. 30-40 undergraduate majors. It offers programs of study at the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. levels. While undergraduate majors and minors and Ph.D. students specialize in one of three sub-areas - ancient Greek and/or Latin language and literature, ancient history, or classical archaeology - the Department encourages students to pursue a broad-based program of study that will provide them with a comprehensive understanding of Graeco-Roman civilization.

The University at Buffalo offers students a variety of housing options. Students have the option to live either on-campus or off-campus. The residence halls are generally reserved for first and second year undergraduate students. The on-campus apartment complexes are reserved for our third and fourth year students. They also have designated on-campus apartment complexes for graduate students. The residence halls are located on both the north and south campus. There are five residence hall facilities on the South Campus: Clement and Goodyear Halls, which are two high-rise halls connected by a service area; Pritchard, MacDonald, and Schoellkopf Halls, which are four story residences. International students choosing to live on the South Campus should choose Clement Hall or MacDonald Hall as their first choice since those are the only two South Campus Residence Halls that remains open during term breaks. The North Campus has two housing clusters: the Governors Residence Halls and the Joseph Ellicott Complex. International students choosing to live on the North Campus should choose Red Jacket Quadrange or Clinton Hall as their first choice since they are the only North Campus Residence Halls that remain open during term breaks. The rooms are furnished with a bed, mattress, desk and chair, nightstand, dresser, and a lamp for each occupant. Rooms are equipped with Ethernet data connections for personal computers. Each room is with a telephone jack and is wired for cable television reception.
