The Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago is an interdisciplinary program in the social sciences that links theory and methodology from fields such as cultural psychology, comparative behavioral biology, sociology, and anthropology. The Department offers programs of research leading to BA and PhD, as well as graduate and undergraduate study in life course development, mental health, personality, and emotions, cross cultural studies (including psychological anthropology and cultural psychology), and comparative behavioral biology. The Department also offers a training program in clinical psychology. The clinical training program is intertwined with the program in research of person in context. The research interests of the faculty represent various disciplines within the social sciences. Emphasis is upon the interrelations of biological, psychological, and sociocultural forces at different points in the life cycle. The primary objectives of the Department are to provide education for innovative careers in research and teaching, and to contribute to the interdisciplinary understanding of human behavior. Students in the Department pursue careers in human development, psychology, anthropology, biology, sociology, and education.

The University of Chicago is located in a unique residential neighborhood within the city of Chicago Hyde Park. As a graduate student at the University, students may take advantage of the University's large pool of affordable and conveniently located housing in the Hyde Park community. Nearly all of the University's students and over 60 percent of its faculty and staff live in the campus neighborhood. This makes for a very special sense of community and a lively intellectual atmosphere that complements the academic experience. The University owns and operates more than 1,300 apartments throughout the neighborhood for lease to graduate students. A spirit of cooperation, both among the tenants and between landlord and tenant, is the norm in the apartments. The most modern facility available to University of Chicago graduate students, the New Graduate Residence Hall (NGRH) is home to more than 120 students. NGRH is open only during the academic year it is closed during the summer quarter. The three story building is illuminated inside through large windows set in from an overhanging roof. Its spacious lobby has the feel of a luxury apartment building Rooms most of them singles with private bathrooms are well removed from these common areas, and include newer maple wood furniture, carpet, University telephone and internet connections and optional cable television. Students may prepare their own meals in a large common kitchen, which has many stoves and refrigerators and individual dry storage bins. Residents may purchase an optional meal plan to eat at specified campus dining halls . There are conference rooms for group study, a well-equipped exercise room, two music rooms with pianos and wireless access in most common areas. The NGRH is two blocks from the Law School and close to rail and bus lines. Public festivals and concerts are also scheduled on the Midway. The cost of attendance for Room and Board is $11,697.
