Founded in 1883, the Department of Near Eastern Studies of the Johns Hopkins University was the first in the United States to offer a Ph.D. The Department now offers programs of study leading to the Ph.D. in five areas: Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures (including Biblical Studies), Egyptology, Assyriology, Ancient Law, and Near Eastern Archaeology. Its approach is to study ancient Near Eastern civilizations with modern tools of analysis (literary, legal, anthropological, etc.), using the ancient written records and physical evidence as the data. The study of language and script forms a major part of the program, with an emphasis on gaining ability to access sources in the original. The archaeology program also has a substantial language requirement. Written records and physical evidence can only be understood in context, which includes their cultural and historical background and their relationship with the surrounding cultures. The programs of study emphasize an integrated approach to the civilizations of the region. They consist of a major area of concentration, a minor from another area (usually a language), and a series of history seminars covering all three principal sub-regions: Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Syria-Palestine. Interdisciplinary efforts are a prominent feature of academic life at Johns Hopkins. The Department's faculty members frequently collaborate in joint teaching and research ventures among themselves and with faculty from other disciplines. Students are encouraged to adopt the same spirit of collaboration within the Department and, where relevant, to participate in courses in other departments.

The Department of Housing and Dining Services believes that through group living, students develop important personal, social and interpersonal skills. There is a two-year residency requirement for all new students attending Johns Hopkins University. This policy requires that first and second year students reside in university housing or at home with a parent or legal guardian. The department of housing and dining services contains several divisions out of which on-campus housing is responsible for campus owned and operated residence halls and apartments. Contracts, room and board billing, room assignments, room selection, summer housing and mail room services are all managed through on-campus housing. The alumni memorial residences I and ii (AMR I and II) are traditional residence halls. They are subdivided into houses enabling residents to build friendships, learn basic rules for community life, plan activities, and participate in intramural athletics. All AMR residents use their j-card to gain entry into their building. There is a laundry room in the basement of their building. Residents share mailboxes (one mailbox per dorm room) in the mailroom located in AMR II. Residents of Sylvester and Wilson houses in AMR I can enjoy small lounges located on the first floors of their residences. In addition, common rooms and amenities in AMR I and II are available for use by all residents. The AMRs have common kitchens equipped with stoves, sinks, refrigerators, and microwave ovens in the basements of the buildings. Pots, pans, utensils, and baking equipment can be signed out for short-term use through the office of residential life. Residents are asked to do a thorough clean-up job after using the kitchen. The university also assists students to get information about the off-campus housing options available.
