The David S. Olton Behavioral Biology Program is an interdepartmental, interdivisional area major for those wishing to study the natural and social sciences in relation to human and animal behavior. The program begins with the fundamental concepts of both the natural sciences and the social sciences. Then the interface between these two areas is explored through specialized courses and electives, and through additional study emphasizing a particular subject. Courses provide a broadly based yet integrated education, focused in the field of behavioral biology. The interaction between behavior and biology takes place in both directions. On the one hand, biology influences behavior. For example, psychopharmacology has demonstrated the importance of neurochemical substances in the brain, and sociobiology has emphasized the role of genetic factors in behavior. On the other hand, behavior also influences biology. An individual’s perception and reaction to life events can have substantial effects on hormonal and physiological functions. In recognizing both of these interactions, behavioral biology seeks to establish a greater understanding of them through its interdisciplinary organization. The interdisciplinary characteristics of behavioral biology provide excellent preparation for post-graduate work. For those interested in the health professions, behavioral biology can be integrated into a premedical curriculum and should provide a broad, humanistic perspective. For those who wish to pursue scientific careers in the neurosciences, especially psychopharmacology or behavioral neuroscience/ physiological psychology, the program provides the appropriate preparation. It is also a major that students interested in the fields of organismal or integrative biology should consider.

The Department of Housing and Dining Services believes that through group living, students develop important personal, social and interpersonal skills. There is a two-year residency requirement for all new students attending Johns Hopkins University. This policy requires that first and second year students reside in university housing or at home with a parent or legal guardian. The department of housing and dining services contains several divisions out of which on-campus housing is responsible for campus owned and operated residence halls and apartments. Contracts, room and board billing, room assignments, room selection, summer housing and mail room services are all managed through on-campus housing. The alumni memorial residences I and ii (AMR I and II) are traditional residence halls. They are subdivided into houses enabling residents to build friendships, learn basic rules for community life, plan activities, and participate in intramural athletics. All AMR residents use their j-card to gain entry into their building. There is a laundry room in the basement of their building. Residents share mailboxes (one mailbox per dorm room) in the mailroom located in AMR II. Residents of Sylvester and Wilson houses in AMR I can enjoy small lounges located on the first floors of their residences. In addition, common rooms and amenities in AMR I and II are available for use by all residents. The AMRs have common kitchens equipped with stoves, sinks, refrigerators, and microwave ovens in the basements of the buildings. Pots, pans, utensils, and baking equipment can be signed out for short-term use through the office of residential life. Residents are asked to do a thorough clean-up job after using the kitchen. The university also assists students to get information about the off-campus housing options available.
