The Department of Second Language Studies is probably the oldest independent department in its field. It was originally called the Department of English as a Second Language (ESL); however, in 2000, it was renamed the Department of Second Language Studies so as to reflect its broader focus. Its faculty and programs are held to be internationally outstanding. Its faculty are active in teaching, research, publication, and serve as members of many professional organizations and editorial boards.

The University housing program provides on-campus housing to Manoa students in a variety of living arrangements that include apartments and traditional coed facilities, single and double occupancy rooms, suites and apartment units. The University housing program strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic community. Specific rules and regulations intended to protect the rights of individuals have been developed by the University administration, residential staff and student leaders. Each resident is responsible to know and observe these rules and regulations. Residents who cannot accept these basic rules for community living or cannot extend consideration for the rights of other residents should evaluate their needs carefully before applying for on-campus housing. Contract releases are not granted for reasons of dissatisfaction with a group living environment. The 2008-2009 Academic Year contract provides housing for the Fall and Spring semesters with prices for traditional doubles starting at $3,497 and apartments units starting at $4,631. Meal plans are handled by a private provider, Sodexho, with prices starting around $1,151 per semester, or $2,302 for the academic year. All applicants should review the assignment terms and priorities for the 2008-2009 academic year.
