Eastern Michigan University is committed to excellence in teaching, the extension of knowledge through basic and applied research, and creative and artistic expression. Founded in 1849, when the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. Eastern Michigan University’s mission and philosophy are built upon shared values that define and nourish the intellectual, ethical and aesthetic environment.

Eastern Michigan University offers traditional residence halls as well as apartment living options for students. Three apartment complexes are available to serve their housing needs. These include Brown/Munson, Cornell Courts and West view apartments. University Apartments include locations convenient to classes, the library and athletic events, utilities included in rent (gas, electric, water and trash collection), basic cable service, laundry rooms in each building, AC’s can be installed, storage facilities at some locations, community rooms for complex activities. Eastern Michigan offers on-campus living options for graduate students in residence halls and University Apartments. Graduate students selecting on-campus living have the choice of living in a single room in either Hill or Hoyt, which are close to food options, the Student Center and the University Library. This university offers residence halls are buell hall, downing hall, and wise hall.
