The School of Arts and Sciences constitutes the liberal arts core of the University of Pittsburgh, one of the major public research universities in the United States. The responsibilities that constitute the school's missions are core elements of the overall mission of the University and have four primary components that draw on the traditional roles and historic and current strengths as a liberal arts school: undergraduate education, faculty research and scholarship, graduate education, and service. Its world-class faculty continually enriches human knowledge by leading disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary research and scholarship in the school and across the University. It is proud of having faculty who are at the forefront of their fields and who are continuously generating new knowledge and new ways of reflecting on and understanding the world. Students in their first year at the University are housed in the first year residence halls: Hemlock, Hickory, Laurel, Maple, and Oak Halls. These facilities are newly renovated and feature double rooms arranged in suites, meaning that two rooms share a semi-private bathroom. The first year residence halls each feature a card access security system that only allows the students who live in a particular building and University staff to access that building. The first year residence halls are located convenient to the Student Union. Students who return to campus after their first year are housed in the following housing areas: College Park Apartments, Living Learning Center, North and South Lodges, Townhouses and Willow Hall. These housing options provide an opportunity for returning students to live in a variety of settings, from apartment and suit style to more traditional double rooms.
