In the Setnor School of Music, their philosophy of graduate education focuses on preparing students for lifelong careers in the world of music and music education. They challenge the students to take their musicianship to the next level, with private study and collaborative music-making in small and large group settings. They also challenge them to think critically about music and expand their horizons in the arts and humanities. This professionally oriented approach prepares their graduate students for positions of vital importance in the music world and as music educators in public schools and colleges. Each graduate student is highly valued and receives personal attention and commitment from their nationally acclaimed faculty. They mentor them closely, and they can interact with them in diverse musical settings both on and off campus. Many faculty are performing professionals, including members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and their musical activities provide them with such learning opportunities as observing rehearsals and performances.

Graduate students have the option of living in University-owned housing on South Campus or in off-campus apartments or houses. Apartment-style university housing is available in Slocum Heights on South Campus, about two miles from Main Campus. Free shuttle bus service is available. These apartments are furnished, utilities are included, and one communications fee covers phone, cable and internet service. Apartment layouts, virtual tours, and associated costs are all available on the University's Housing. There are also numerous apartment complexes and rental houses that the graduate students choose to live in. Many are within walking distance or on the bus line.
