This program emphasizes courses in the basic sciences, including a strong foundation in biology, genetics and molecular genetics. Plant biotechnology and molecular genetics are at the center of the development of many unique products with vast benefits to producers and consumers. This concentration prepares students to use the exciting new technology that's revolutionizing agriculture. Students are encouraged to participate in an independent study in a molecular biology laboratory to gain experience in applying laboratory skills.

Department has established the following objectives as to: discover, formulate and demonstrate new principles of crop improvement and soil-crop management so that Illinois agriculture is socially viable, profitable for the farmer, and competitive on world markets. In other words it means to improve field crops and soil-crop management; discover, formulate, and demonstrate new principles for prevention and management of diseases, insects, and weeds affecting field, specialty food and amenity crops. In other words, the objective is to develop disease, insect and weed management strategies for crops.

The University of Illinois provides a variety of housing options for undergraduate, graduate students, guest and visiting scholars and students with families. It offers Beckwith residence halls, living-learning communities, Ashton Woods apartments and private certified housing to the undergraduate students. The privately owned certified housing units on campus are home to over 2,400 students. Located on or near the campus, all are within walking distance to the Quad, classrooms and libraries. Undergraduate students with 30 or more credits are eligible to apply for a lease at Ashton Woods apartments, which offer two-bedroom unfurnished apartments, cable, High-Speed Internet, Off-Street lighted Parking. Water/Sewer/Trash is included in the rent and laundry facilities in each building. Daniels Hall, Ashton Woods apartments, Goodwin-Green apartments, Orchard Downs apartments and Sherman Hall are offered to the graduate students. To support the academic success of graduate students and students with families, it also offers apartment communities at Ashton Woods, Goodwin-Green, and Orchard Downs to accommodate their unique needs. The residence hall dining centers are located throughout campus. The university's special free-flow dining service allows students to eat any meal in any residence hall dining location. They offer a choice of dining plans with various degrees of flexibility.
