The Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences (IMCS) is a world-class oceanographic research institute dedicated to discovering and communicating exciting and critical science about the planet for the benefit of society. Its philosophy emphasizes the importance of understanding the processes that govern change and sustainability in the world’s oceans to best use and protect vital marine and coastal resources. Today, the institute remains true to the unique vision of Dr. Fred Grassle, whose founding principles established a tradition of pioneering research through integrative, inter-disciplinary approaches to ocean science, education and public service. Since its inception in 1989, IMCS has experienced rapid growth in federal funding from agencies such as NOAA, NSF, ONR and NASA. This success is attributed to the outstanding faculty and staff drawn from diverse departments around the university, including the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences , Department of Environmental Sciences , Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis , Department of Ecology, Evolution & Natural Resources , and the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory . Emphasis on collaboration has led to major interdisciplinary initiatives in undersea science and technology; ocean modeling; observation, prediction and analysis; environmental biophysics and molecular biology; ecosystem dynamics; and protected area management. In addition, IMCS supports a dynamic Coastal Ocean Observing System, employing innovative applications of ocean technology, such as autonomous undersea vehicles that support homeland security, monitor episodic and long-term ocean processes, and explore the biological complexity of marine ecosystems.

The university provides both on-campus and off-campus housing. In off-campus rooms are usually unfurnished singles (rooms for one person) or doubles (rooms for two people), and a great number are within walking distance of a campus. The common areas of the unit-as well as the household responsibilities-are usually shared by all tenants. Rooms in Private Homes are rooms in owner-occupied apartments or houses. They are usually furnished and generally include partial or all utility charges in the monthly rent. Rooms in private homes do not always include kitchen privileges, and few are available within walking distance of a campus. Most are in surrounding municipalities. In on-campus housing student residence halls provide the following equipment and facilities. In the rooms: A bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet for each student, window coverings (drapes or blinds), and smoke detector. In the buildings (most residences have these facilities in the building): Laundry. Lounge (many with TV). Study area. Kitchen or kitchenette (many with microwaves). Food and beverage vending machines. Conveniently nearby on each campus: dining hall(s), library computer lab(s), recreational center (Busch, College Avenue, and Cook offer swimming pools), campus activities center, numerous bus stops, public pay phones.
