The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology has "175" years of research in the areas of microbiology and biochemistry. Edward Voorhees established the Department of Soil Chemistry and Bacteriology in 1901, the first department of agricultural microbiology in the country and the progenitor of the current Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. The Biochemistry component of the Department had its genesis at the School of Agriculture as the Department of Agricultural Biochemistry in 1925 under Dr. Walter C. Russell. In 1965, the Departments of Agricultural Microbiology and Agricultural Biochemistry were merged to form the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. Today the Department carries on this rich heritage in both disciplines using state-of-the-art techniques and instrumentation. The research that is conducted in the department focuses on environmental aspects of microbiology (heavy metal and chlorinated hydrocarbon transformations, blue-green bacteria, antibiotic residues and biomass degradation) and biochemistry/toxicology (endrocrine disrupters, lead's mechanism of action, dioxins effects, genomics and proteinomics). It is, however the current faculty's intellectual prowess that continues to make new discoveries that will solve problems of the 21st Century.

The university provides both on-campus and off-campus housing. In off-campus rooms are usually unfurnished singles (rooms for one person) or doubles (rooms for two people), and a great number are within walking distance of a campus. The common areas of the unit-as well as the household responsibilities-are usually shared by all tenants. Rooms in Private Homes are rooms in owner-occupied apartments or houses. They are usually furnished and generally include partial or all utility charges in the monthly rent. Rooms in private homes do not always include kitchen privileges, and few are available within walking distance of a campus. Most are in surrounding municipalities. In on-campus housing student residence halls provide the following equipment and facilities. In the rooms: A bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet for each student, window coverings (drapes or blinds), and smoke detector. In the buildings (most residences have these facilities in the building): Laundry. Lounge (many with TV). Study area. Kitchen or kitchenette (many with microwaves). Food and beverage vending machines. Conveniently nearby on each campus: dining hall(s), library computer lab(s), recreational center (Busch, College Avenue, and Cook offer swimming pools), campus activities center, numerous bus stops, public pay phones.
