Spanish Major examines the structure, perspectives and philosophical approaches of the literatures and cultures of Iberia (Catalan included), Latin America and US Latinos by placing them within their sociohistorical contexts. In addition to fostering cultural awareness and familiarity with the Hispanic world, this process will provide students with a meaningful liberal arts training.

As an undergraduate, a student may apply for admission as a freshman or a transfer. To be considered for admission to UCI as a freshman, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country. Students who have attended school under the British system must present 5 GCSE/Ordinary level examinations and at least 2 Advanced level examinations with superior grades. International applicants whose native language is other than English will be required to demonstrate their English proficiency. This is most often accomplished by achieving a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80. Freshman applicants who graduated from high school in spring 2005 or earlier are required to have taken the SAT I: Reasoning Test (or ACT) and three SAT II: Subject Tests prior to high school graduation and a score of 7 on the IELTS. Students should Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.2, with a GPA of 3.4 or higher in all dramatic literature, history, and theory courses.
