The emphasis teaches core communication concepts and skills related to social influence and advocacy. Students who complete this emphasis will understand how individuals, businesses, and communities use communication to accomplish their goals and to shape their own and others’ identities, and develop and improve communication skills essential for success in personal, professional, and public settings. Majors in this emphasis will learn how to assess situations that call for rhetorical intervention, to plan suitable responses, and to communicate ethically with various publics in speech, in writing, and in performance. The rhetoric and performance studies emphasis is relevant to a broad range of careers, including management, marketing, mass communication, public relations, social and human services, community psychology, community studies, political science, criminal justice, government, law, or international relations.

Modul program

The following are the modules: Communication Studies Major (40): Core: 19 credits: CMST 100, 211 or 210, 220, 300, 301, 319, 330; UDWR: 3 credits: CMST 303; Required: 9 credits: CMST 310 or 318; Choose two of the following: CMST 410/510 or CMST 411/511 or CMST 412/512; Rhetoric and Performance Studies Electives: 6 credits: Choose two courses: CMST 302 (repeatable with different topic and designated for this emphasis), 310, 313, 314, 316, 318, 338 or 439/539 (3 cr. max), 341 or 441/541 (3 cr. max), 402/502 (repeatable with different topic and designated for this emphasis). Rhetoric and Performance Studies General Electives: 3 credits; Choose any CMST 3 credit course.

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Applicants must have four years of English including composition and literature, three years of social studies including one year each of U.S. history and geography, three years of math including two years of algebra and one of geometry, two years of the same world language, one year in an area of the arts, three years of science including one year of each of a biological and physical science and one year laboratory experience. International applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements: meet the score of 61 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or 500 for the Institutional (paper) TOEFL or 500 standard on International (paper) Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Apart from this they must also have 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), 70 on Michigan, SAT critical reading score of 370, graduation from an English-medium high school with a 2.5 (cumulative equivalent) GPA or higher.
