This program seeks to provide students with linguistic, communication, cultural and critical thinking skills in Spanish so that they can pursue graduate school or careers which require them to utilize these cross cultural competencies in an increasing globalized world. To pursue these goals, students take a sequence of basic core courses in language skills and content areas like linguistics, and literature and culture of the Spanish speaking world. Later in their program students can choose concentrations in Literature and Culture, Linguistics, Spanish for the Professions or the Teaching of Spanish at the Elementary and High School level.

All applicants should furnish the high school coursework requirements in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Lab. Science, one Foreign Language and flexible academic units; ACT Composite scores or SAT I scores and activities, service, and work experience. An audition, portfolio or interview may be required for Fine and Applied Arts applicants.

The Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is ranked nationally as one of the top ten graduate programs at public research universities. It is a world class group with more than 30 faculty members, over 50 graduate students, and over 350 undergraduate majors. It is diverse in terms of research area and approach (literary/cultural studies, linguistics, Latina/o Studies) as well as national origin and language (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Basque, Catalan and Quechua). The research is supported by the University Library, the world's largest public university collection with over 10 million volumes.

The University of Illinois provides a variety of housing options for undergraduate, graduate students, guest and visiting scholars and students with families. It offers Beckwith residence halls, living-learning communities, Ashton Woods apartments and private certified housing to the undergraduate students. The privately owned certified housing units on campus are home to over 2,400 students. Located on or near the campus, all are within walking distance to the Quad, classrooms and libraries. Undergraduate students with 30 or more credits are eligible to apply for a lease at Ashton Woods apartments, which offer two-bedroom unfurnished apartments, cable, High-Speed Internet, Off-Street lighted Parking. Water/Sewer/Trash is included in the rent and laundry facilities in each building. Daniels Hall, Ashton Woods apartments, Goodwin-Green apartments, Orchard Downs apartments and Sherman Hall are offered to the graduate students. To support the academic success of graduate students and students with families, it also offers apartment communities at Ashton Woods, Goodwin-Green, and Orchard Downs to accommodate their unique needs. The residence hall dining centers are located throughout campus. The university's special free-flow dining service allows students to eat any meal in any residence hall dining location. They offer a choice of dining plans with various degrees of flexibility.
