Ringkasan program

This program offers a very wide variety of subjects, approaches, classes, professors and experiences. From the great classics of Russian literature to the operations of the current Russian mafia, from gypsy music and culture of the Balkans to the history of Stalin's gulag, from nomadic art of Central Asia to contemporary Russian cinema, the REES major is a gateway to a whole world of knowledge and experience. Many students who graduate with a REES major pursue further study in graduate school, law school, business school and education. Graduates work in government and foreign affairs. Other opportunities include business, library science, research analysis, editing, writing, and publishing. Increasingly, there are wide-ranging opportunities to study, work, and volunteer in the many countries of Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Union, such as going with the peace corps to Ukraine, traveling on a research trip to Central Asia, or teaching English in Russia. Traditionally, graduate students in Slavic linguistics take a series of courses on Old Church Slavonic, an introduction to the Slavic languages, the historical development of Russian and Russian morphology and phonology. In REESC, these courses are not offered every year, so the student hoping to concentrate in linguistics is advised to take any Slavic course offered that year, and at the same time to complement specific studies in Slavic linguistics with general linguistics courses, as well as the electives in Russian and East European area studies that are a required component of the program. After taking Old Church Slavonic, students may be able to work with Professor Vakareliyska on medieval liturgical texts. As in other fields of concentration, students will be expected to pass a master’s exam in Slavic linguistics (typically in the winter quarter of the second year) and to write a thesis (typically the subsequent spring).

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Students must have satisfactorily completed high school (secondary school) with a B average or a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale. Students must have a minimum score of 500 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language or 61 on the internet-based TOEFL or a minimum score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
