Clarke College is a Catholic, co-educational, liberal arts institution. It was founded in 1843 by Mary Frances Clarke, founders of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), it is the only BVM College in the United States. Clarke College's 55-acre campus sits on a bluff in a quiet residential area overlooking the city of Dubuque, Iowa (population 60,000) and the Mississippi River.

Living in campus residence halls is an important part of student development for traditional-age students at Clarke College. Housing is offered in Mary Benedict Hall, Mary Josita Hall , Mary Frances Hall and Catherine Dunn apartments. Mary Josita Hall and Mary Benedict Hall house mostly first- and second-year students in double rooms. Then there’s the historic Mary Frances Hall, a co-ed building consisting of mostly single rooms, some with private bathrooms. If students are looking for a change of place, Clarke offers apartment-style living in the Catherine Dunn Apartments. Housing 96 students, the six-person apartments offer single bedrooms, two bathrooms and a common kitchen, dining and living area. It is co-ed by floor. Each hall is equipped with a computer lab, laundry facilities, study lounges, formal lounge and kitchen. Students under the age of 21 are required to live on-campus unless they are formally exempt and are residing with their parent(s), legal guardian(s) or spouse. All freshmen are assigned to double occupancy rooms with a roommate. Students of sophomore status or higher can request a single room or a double as a single room on a first come, first serve basis. Students may request special accommodations due to medical conditions that might be improved by basic accommodation differences, such as a single room or an air conditioner.
