This program mainly focused on creative writing encompasses a variety of academic and career goals (e.g., graduate school in English; secondary certification); therefore, students with specific objectives should choose a concentration and consult with the English advisor as soon as possible to ensure optimal selection of advanced English electives. Students majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing must complete all university and college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Modul program

The modules are six hour university core requirement in Communication (ENGL 1303 and 1304 or equivalents) and MATH 1310 or equivalent. Thirty-nine advanced hours in English (3000- and 4000-level courses), to include: Nine hours in British literature, to include: Six hours in British literature before 1798 (ENGL 3302 through 3313, 3317, and 3327); Three hours any British literature (3000- or 4000-level). Six hours in American literature, to include: Three hours in American literature before 1900 (ENGL 3350 or 3352); Three hours any American literature (3000- or 4000-level). Six hours of electives in English (3000- or 4000-level courses, excluding creative writing courses). Three hours in literature since 1950. Fifteen hours in Creative Writing courses, to include: Six hours in 3000-level creative writing: ENGL 3329 and either ENGL 3330 or 3331; Three hours in ENGL 4355 or 4356; Three hours ENGL 4350, 4351, 4352 (or any other 4000-level creative writing courses or repeats of a 4000-level course with approval of the instructor); Three hours ENGL 4353 or 4354.

Students must meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas four-year public institution. Students must successfully complete the recommended or advanced high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or students must have the scores of SAT - 1500 out of 2400 (verbal, math and writing)/ACT - 18 English, 21 reading, 22 mathematics and 24 science; or successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs. Students that do not meet one of first two requirements must prove they meet the third requirement by having their counselor fill out the high school curriculum certification form and submit to the University of Houston. Students must complete each of the high school academic core courses (four units of English; three units of mathematics, including at least algebra I, algebra II, and geometry; two units of laboratory science, including at least one unit/credit in biology, chemistry, or physics; three units of social studies; two units/credits in one foreign language) with an average of a 2.5 or a “C+” or higher for the group. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or completion of level six of the University of Houston’s Language and Culture Center.
