In this concentration students take a broad selection of courses in English and American literature, expository and professional writing, language and rhetoric. The program emphasizes oral and written communication, critical analysis, and scholarly research, providing guided practice in the kinds of skill important to legal studies and the practice of law. Of the 33 credit hours required for the major, students select 6 hours as electives. Students in this concentration will leave with skill in language, research, and analysis that are valuable not only in law, but also in business and industry, publishing, public service, and education. Students who wish to conclude their sequence by writing a thesis, must qualify for and enter the English Departmental Honors Program.

Students must have an American upper secondary school education or equivalent and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations, with strong academic preparation or a U.S. equivalent grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (for freshman applicants) or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (for transfer students), a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or a minimum of 520 on the paper test, 190 on the computerized version, or 68 on the internet-based test in TOEFL, minimum score for the CPE or CAE is a C.

The university's Residence Life Office believes the residence halls are more than just a place to sleep and study. In addition to academics, the residence life staff plans activities and programs to foster social interaction and develop well-rounded students. This is done through the work of resident advisors, student head residents, desk, mailroom and security staff, and community association members. They also provide para-professional counseling and enforce policies. Residence life includes: hall community associations, resident advisors, social and educational activities, residence hall desks, student discipline, counseling, security, conflict mediation. Students are responsible for cleaning their rooms. Maid and custodian services are provided for public areas of the halls on a Monday through Friday basis, washers and dryers are provided in each residence hall. Mail is distributed through the central mail room facility located behind the 24 Hour Desk in the Student Residence Center Commons Building, vending machines are located in the residence halls for convenience of the residents, a limited number of refrigerator units available for rent each semester. Students wishing to store firearms or other weapons (hunting knives, archery, fencing, or martial arts equipment) may do so at the Campus Police Station. The Computer POD is located on the second floor in the Student Residence Center and is managed by student housing's ResNet staff. POD computers are for the exclusive use of residence hall students.
