This department consists of over 50 faculty members, more than 90 graduate students, and over 2000 undergraduate psychology majors. Graduate students work closely with their faculty mentors and interact extensively with each other. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged and facilitated by several interdepartmental institutes. The University of Colorado is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution. The Department encourages applications from minority students and has special programs for their support. The Department of Psychology was established in 1910 but remained connected to Education until 1922 when Lawrence W. Cole began to expand and develop the curriculum into experimental psychology, physiological psychology, and other areas.

This university has a variety of different room types available to students. There are single, double, triple, quad, and five-person rooms with either community or private baths. Also available in some halls are one- and two-student buffets and two, three, and four student apartments. Furniture is provided for each occupant, and can be arranged in a variety of ways including bunking and lofting beds. All 22 halls are coed, though arrangements vary by location. In some cases, men and women live on separate floors; in others, men and women live adjacent to one another. The gender layout is generally determined based on bathroom accommodations. In almost all cases, separate bathroom facilities are designated on each floor and wing. Most halls are open to all levels of students. Farrand and Sewall are reserved for freshmen and sophomores. Reed is generally open to non-freshman or graduate students only. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-accessible facilities are available. All residence halls have full-time, professional hall directors, chosen for their solid understanding of college students and residence hall life. Each floor also has a resident advisor (RA), a sophomore or an upper-division student with the experience, knowledge, and training to answer the student's questions and serve as a resource and a liaison to the campus community. Housing and Dining Services provides wired high-speed Internet connectivity to all student units, one jack per unit. Each room also includes a phone jack and cable service.
