The Justice Administration (JADM) program at Hawai‘i Pacific University prepares students for various careers in the private and public sectors, both in Hawai‘i and globally. Students will learn about Justice Administration—the civil (non-criminal) law system and the criminal justice system—in the classroom as well as in the professional world. The JADM program makes the training of practitioners in Justice Administration for good jobs its highest priority. JADM students at HPU are exposed to various forms of job training, career-related work experiences, and volunteer involvement in settings of interest to them in Honolulu, the state capital and the hub of Pacific business activity. Students who complete a degree in Justice Administration have used their insight and qualification to work in many parts of the world as global citizens, here in Hawai‘i, on the U.S. mainland, and in Asia, Europe, and other parts of Polynesia. Program Objectives • Evaluate law enforcement situations in an organized manner. • Apply basic legal and management theories to a broad range of justice administration applications. • Demonstrate understanding of the key processes in justice administration systems. • Synthesize concepts from management, law, and the behavioral sciences and apply them to contemporary situations. Student Memberships Students majoring in Justice Administration will receive, and are encouraged to contribute to, the HPU LAW and JADM newsletter. ACQUIRED TRANSFERABLE SKILLS Transferable skills—those skills which can be applied in a variety of different contexts— are highly valued by employers. • Speak well in all varieties of public presentations and work situations. • Write all types of communications - ranging from reports to internal office memorandums - in a clear and convincing manner • Understand thoroughly and explain all aspects of the civil (non-criminal) justice system - the civil law cases, the federal and state courts (trial and appellate), the role of attorneys from the private, public, and non-profit sectors, and the role of juries. • Understand thoroughly and explain all aspects of the criminal justice system - the law enforcement agencies, the prosecutors, the public defenders, the criminal justice cases, the federal and state courts (trial and appellate), the role of juries, the probation and parole processes, and the corrections institutions. • Identify and consider the implications of your own position(s) in the civil justice system and the criminal justice system.
