Ringkasan program
This program aims to understand the physical world around and the evolution of the planet. Mountains, oceans, volcanoes, earthquakes, and the evolution of life are topics that fall under the umbrella of geoscience. Earth science majors gain several important skills. They gain an appreciation for the inner workings of the planet. They develop the ability to unravel complex problems, often with incomplete or sub-optimal information. And they are exposed to interdisciplinary science that impacts society. Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in geological sciences are qualified for employment in a wide range of careers, including resource management, geotechnical and environmental consulting, urban and rural planning, petroleum and mining industries, state and federal agencies such as the USGS, USFS, NOAA, EPA, and DEQ, teaching in K-12 schools (with additional teaching certificate), and as laboratory technicians, professional geologists, geophysicists, or geochemists. The current climate is very good for employment in the earth sciences (see links below). A degree in geology or environmental science equips students with skills in critical thinking and problem solving, quantitative analysis, oral and written communication, team work, and collaboration, all of which area highly valued in today's geoscience job market. The Geology track provides students with a rigorous background that emphasizes traditional disciplines of petrology, structural geology, tectonics, stratigraphy, and field studies. Upper-division electives permit students to focus in a chosen sub discipline or develop greater breadth, and include courses in geophysics, geochemistry, petrology, data analysis, physics, math, geomorphology, and neotectonics. Students who complete a degree with a major in geological sciences are eligible to apply to the College of Education’s fifth-year licensure program in middle-secondary teaching or the fifth-year licensure program in elementary teaching.
