The Department of Communication includes 20 faculty members instructing approximately 500 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students in programs in mass communication, speech and corporate communication, journalism, broadcast media, and public relations. The department also supports a variety of student organizations and activities including an intercollegiate forensics program that has won several national championships; The Muleskinner, an award-winning weekly student newspaper; and digitalBurg.com, the Muleskinner's online daily community newspaper for Warrensburg. Both publications use students as writers, reporters, editors, photographers and advertising sales personnel.

Living in university housing puts students in the hub of campus life. Residence halls are a short walking distance from all of their classes and all three cafeterias. Meal plans can be purchased for the campus cafeterias, which are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or they can grab a quick bite in the Elliott Union food court. With the exception of the Fraternity Complex, all of UCM's residence halls are suite-style (only share a bathroom with one other room) and are non-smoking. Each hall has its own unique advantages. With so many options it may be difficult to determine which hall to live in. All of the residence halls are co-ed except for Yeater Hall, Panhellenic Hall (sorority housing) and the Fraternity Complex (fraternity housing). The co-ed residence halls for upperclass students are co-ed by suite and others are co-ed by floor. Females may choose to live in Yeater Hall if they would like an all-female floor. The all-male floors are located on East Ellis second floor. Yeater Hall is the sole all-female residence hall. The well-equipped apartments are available for single students, who have completed at least 30 credit hours, are at least 21 years old and/or are a graduate student and who are not having any academic or disciplinary problems. University Apartments have several different floor plan options for students to choose from.
