This University was established by the Florida State Legislature in 1961 as the fifth university in the state system, accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. When it opened its doors in 1964, FAU was the first university in the country to offer only upper-division and graduate-level work. This model was based on the theory that freshmen and sophomores would be served by the community college system. Outside the classroom, hundreds of student activities are conducted from fraternities and sororities to pre-professional student associations and enrich the learning experience and nurture relationships that last a lifetime. With people from all 50 states and more than 130 countries studying, living and working at FAU, few things unite like standing shoulder to shoulder at a game cheering the Owls to victory. The University sponsors 18 NCAA Division I sports and has secured 21 conference championships. Its faculty and students ratio is 1:18 with 486 female and 603 male faculties. There are over 19,500 lifelong learners who register for 35,000 classes on the FAU campuses.

This university provides on-campus housing through its residence halls and apartments. The Algonquin Hall, a suite style building available to both upperclassmen and freshmen, renovated in 2007 to update the facilities and provides solely single rooms. Each side of the suite accommodates 2 residents who share a common living area. Usually, 4 students share a bathroom facility. Student is provided a microwave and compact refrigerator. The Business and Professional Woman’s Scholarship House was established to provide campus housing for women with strong academic promise and substantial outside financial assistance in order to attend FAU. It is a cooperative living/learning facility where 16 women share leadership experience, develop life skills, and community responsibilities. The Glades Park Towers is a suite-style residence hall consisting of both double and single rooms. Usually, 4 residents share a bathroom facility. All room in here is fully furnished, and all bedrooms feature unlimited access Ethernet connections and basic cable television service. Additionally, it offers a 24 hour desk operation, Wireless Ethernet access, floor study lounges, multipurpose room with large screen TV, laundry facilities, conference room, computer lab, classroom and convenience store. The Heritage Park Towers is a suite-style residence hall for both freshmen and upperclassmen, comprised of fully furnished double and single bedrooms, and in most cases, four residents share a bathroom. The Indian River Towers is a suite-style residence hall featuring both double and single rooms with a living area and 2 bathroom facilities, mostly instances, 2 residents share a bathroom, and bedrooms are equipped with unlimited access Ethernet connections and basic cable television service. The University Village Apartment community accommodates more than 500 upper-division students. In general, first-year college students are not eligible to reside in the apartment community.
