This program is appropriate for students who plan careers as church musicians or music ministers. A Bachelor of Music with Elective Studies in Religion is a four-year music degree with a minor in religion.

Modul program

The modules are applied music in the major instrument or voice: 14 (Four hours at the freshman, sophomore, and junior levels; and two hours at the senior level including senior recital). Chamber Music or Accompanying (as appropriate) (1 credit hour required for student pursuing elective Studies in Teacher Certification (Instrumental) 1-2, MUSI 1160, 1161, 2160, and 2161 Group Piano I, II, III, IV (plus proficiency exam) 4, MUSI 1170, 1171, 2170, and 2171 Aural Skills I, II, III, and IV 4, MUSI 1310 and 1311 Music Theory I and II 6, MUSI 2210 Music Theory III [MUSI 2210 and 2214 fulfills 3 hours of Math Reasoning Core] 2, MUSI 2214 Techniques of Music Since 1900 [MUSI 2210 and 2214 fulfills 3 hours of Math Reasoning Core] 2, MUSI 2361 Music and Culture [fulfills 3 hours of Visual/Performing Arts Core] 3, MUSI 2362, 3363, and 3364 Music History I, II, and III 9, MUSI 3215 Introduction to Large Forms 2, MUSI 4212 Instrumentation 2, MUSI 4220 or 4230 Conducting I (appropriate to the applied area) 2, Large ensemble (appropriate to the applied area) 7. Students must meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas four-year public institution. Students must successfully complete the recommended or advanced high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or students must have the scores of SAT - 1500 out of 2400 (verbal, math and writing)/ACT - 18 English, 21 reading, 22 mathematics and 24 science; or successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs. Students that do not meet one of first two requirements must prove they meet the third requirement by having their counselor fill out the high school curriculum certification form and submit to the University of Houston. Students must complete each of the high school academic core courses (four units of English; three units of mathematics, including at least algebra I, algebra II, and geometry; two units of laboratory science, including at least one unit/credit in biology, chemistry, or physics; three units of social studies; two units/credits in one foreign language) with an average of a 2.5 or a “C+” or higher for the group. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or completion of level six of the University of Houston’s Language and Culture Center.
