This program provides pre-professional training that emphasizes vocal technique and repertoire in a challenging program of overall vocal development. This program of study prepares singers for careers in concert and recital performance, opera and private teaching.

Eligibility for admission as a freshman is determined primarily on the basis of high school preparation, the SAT or ACT score, and the TOEFL score. Official SAT or ACT and TOEFL reports are required. TOEFL - a minimum score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer) is required for admission. Additional admission consideration will be based on an evaluation of involvement and level of responsibility in extracurricular activities and involvement in responsible, non-academic activities while attending high school. The Texas THEA test may be required during the first semester, depending on SAT/ACT score.

The School of Performing Arts of The University of Texas at Tyler offers excellence in instruction and performance opportunities through participation in choirs, wind ensembles, chamber ensembles, jazz and staged musical productions. The department offers coursework towards Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies degrees. Students may select an emphasis in instrumental or vocal music education; instrumental, vocal, or keyboard performance; piano pedagogy; music history; music theory; and composition, or composition with teaching certification. UT Tyler offers outstanding facilities for musical performance. R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center: The Cowan Center is the focal point for performing arts on campus, as well as in the City of Tyler and the Northeast Texas region. It houses the School of Performing Arts and includes state-of-the-art lecture and performance facilities, including Vaughn Auditorium and Braithwaite Recital Hall, offices, classroom, studio, digital MIDI lab, and rehearsal spaces. Jim and Bonna Bess Vaughn Auditorium: Vaughn Auditorium comfortably seats 2,000 patrons in a warm acoustical environment. As an ensemble member, students perform upon a large, well-equipped stage. The orchestra pit floor, visible at lower right in this image, may be raised hydraulically for concert use, or lowered for musical theatre productions. David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Recital Hall: Braithwaite Recital Hall is the venue for solo recitals and small chamber performances. It seats 161 patrons in three sections, with ample access for those with physical disabilities. The School's Steinway concert grand piano, hand selected in New York by the faculty, and resides on the stage for solo and accompanying work. A second Steinway is also available for duo-piano and concerto work.
