Computer science and engineering emerged some 30 years ago as a promising new field for engineering research and development. Today, the discipline stands as a cornerstone of the field of engineering. Here in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at USF, they take pride in the fact that, as the youngest of the College of Engineering's six departments, they have, in the first 25 years of existence, shown an impressive record of achievement. They are a young and energetic department establishing themselves as one of the premiere computer science and engineering departments in the nation. The department was founded in 1980, opening its doors to students during the 1980-81 academic year. Initially, they were housed on the sixth floor of the campus library, a location that quickly proved inadequate for their rapidly expanding program. In 1987 they gladly relocated to the newly built Engineering Building II, which they now share with the Department of Electrical Engineering. Today the department have 27 faculty members, many of whom are active researchers; seven staff members; and some 584 students. The graduates are well received and have been successful with careers in high-tech industry, national laboratories, and at major universities worldwide.

University of South Florida provides the on campus housing which is comfortable and convenient for students. They offer a wide range of living options for students who wish to live on campus. There are three types of housing at USF traditional-style, suite-style and apartment-style. In a traditional-style residence hall, double bedrooms are provided with community bathrooms and kitchens on each floor. The traditional-style halls include Beta Hall and Castor Hall with Castor Hall offering both single and double bedrooms. Suite-style residence halls offer the most common type of housing at USF. The halls are grouped into Andros Complex, Cypress Hall and Maple Hall. In Andros Complex, each suite consists of either four double bedrooms or four single bedrooms connected by a semi-private bathroom. The buildings with suites located at Andros include Delta, Epsilon, Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Theta and Zeta. In Cypress and Maple Halls, each suite consists of two double bedrooms and one bathroom. In Cypress, Holly and Magnolia apartments, the apartment unit contains four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and living room. Kosove Apartments offers a mix of single and double bedrooms in 2-5 person apartments. All residence halls are fully air-conditioned, with wall-to-wall carpeting and include cable television, telephone service and Ethernet connections. The residential community includes a convenience store, dining centers, classroom space, study lounges, laundry facilities, mail delivery options and a computer lab.
