Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University Calumet recognizes the breadth and depth of modern biology and is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. The anatomy and physiology laboratories are designed for 24 students each and are used primarily for the laboratory portion of a two-semester course required by students in the allied health and nursing programs. Both labs are equipped with compound binocular microscopes. There are dissecting microscopes and compound microscopes for demonstrations in each lab and a compound microscope attached to a monitor for group instruction. Gyte Tissue Culture Laboratory, This is a comprehensive cell culture laboratory. Major facilities and equipment include a chemical hood, laminar flow cabinets, CO2 incubators, liquid nitrogen tanks for cryogenic storage of human cancer cell lines, centrifuges, electroporation system, refrigerator, -80oC freezer, and inverted microscopes. Gyte Bioinformatics and Image Analysis Laboratory, This laboratory is located between the tissue culture lab and the molecular biology lab. It contains numerous computers used for human chromosome analysis and bioinformatics analysis. The laboratory is equipped with a research microscope for computer based human chromosome imaging and karyotype analysis. It also has a computer based gel documentation and image analysis system. Gyte Cell Biology Research Laboratory, This laboratory has an inverted microscope with CALI (chromphore-assisted laser inactivation) which is used for immunocyto-chemistry and tissue culture work. The microscope is equipped with epifluoresce optics and a digital B/W camera. MetaVue software is used for instrument control, time-lapse imaging, and analysis. A dye-driven laser is available for micro-CALI work. Gyte Molecular Research Laboratory, This lab is adjacent to the cell/molecular biology teaching lab so that facilities and equipment may be shared for teaching purposes.
