This program seeks to develop students' capacity to think systematically and analytically about social issues. These analytical abilities give the graduates a strong fundamental background for success in professional life. Economics is the study of how a society chooses to allocate its finite resources among the infinite demands of its members. This includes analysis of the decisions made by households and firms about production and consumption of finished goods, inputs to production, and labor services, in addition to analysis of the impact of public policies on these decisions and on the economic well-being of society and its members. Specific subject areas studied in economics include aggregate analysis of business cycles and economic growth (macroeconomics), analysis of labor markets, public finance and taxation, industrial organization, international trade, and the economics of money and banking.

Modul program

The modules are 30 hours (at least 21 advanced) to include: ECON 2370(or equivalent) 3cr; ECON 3332 and 3334 6cr; ECON electives (advanced) 15cr; ECON electives (any level) 6cr. In addition, students must take MATH 1313 or 1314 or equivalents and at least one of the following: ECON 4349, 4350, 4360, 4362, 4364, or 4365 (counts as part of the required 15 advanced semester hours). Students must complete at least 15 of the required 30 semester hours in economics. Twelve of these 15 hours must be advanced. Transferred credit to be counted toward the economics major requirements must have a grade of C- or better. Students considering graduate study in economics are strongly urged to substitute MATH 1330 and 1431 for MATH 1313 and 1314, and to take additional electives in mathematics.

Students must meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas four-year public institution. Students must successfully complete the recommended or advanced high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or students must have the scores of SAT - 1500 out of 2400 (verbal, math and writing)/ACT - 18 English, 21 reading, 22 mathematics and 24 science; or successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs. Students that do not meet one of first two requirements must prove they meet the third requirement by having their counselor fill out the high school curriculum certification form and submit to the University of Houston. Students must complete each of the high school academic core courses (four units of English; three units of mathematics, including at least algebra I, algebra II, and geometry; two units of laboratory science, including at least one unit/credit in biology, chemistry, or physics; three units of social studies; two units/credits in one foreign language) with an average of a 2.5 or a “C+” or higher for the group. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or completion of level six of the University of Houston’s Language and Culture Center.
