The Mathematics Department shares in the rich 3,000 year tradition of mathematical study and research in which the human mind has sought Coleridge's "beauty as unity in diversity." Indeed, modern mathematics provides the essential paradigm within which a quantitative understanding of our world is made possible. Moreover, mathematics is the exemplar of a human endeavor that truly transcends ethnic, societal, and national divisions - the language of mathematics is the same in every country, regardless of national tongue.

Living on campus can be one of the most rewarding experiences of their lifetime. It’s an opportunity to meet people who will become lifelong friends, a chance to discover more about yourself and a time for new challenges. St. Mary’s will have 12 residence halls in 2009 to provide students with a home away from home. Freshmen will be assigned to Founders Hall, The Lady of Lourdes Hall, or Marian Hall. Marian Hall will house the new science living and learning community. Students majoring in science, engineering, mathematics, and psychology will be able to participate in activities that enrich and expand the learning that occurs in the classroom. Founders Hall - A new 81,000 square foot freshman residence hall is slated to open in fall 2009. This suite-style, co-ed hall will be built for 276 first-year students, making it the largest on campus. Besides a cyber cafe, a grand courtyard, and meeting and worship spaces, students will enjoy built-in safety features, free laundry, and an Internet "port-per-pillow" rooms wired for cable and wireless internet. Lourdes Hall (1982) is named in honor of the Blessed Mother, who in 1858 appeared several times to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubrious in Lourdes, France. The title “Our Lady of Lourdes” is one of the best-known Marian appellations, and the Grotto of Lourdes is one of the world’s most visited Marian shrines.
