On July 1, 2003, the School of Human Environmental Sciences and the Carolyn Freeze Baynes School of Social Work and Criminal Justice Studies combined to form the College of Human Ecology. Both schools have long and proud traditions on campus. Although the School of Human Environmental Sciences was established by the Board of Trustees in 1968, the school’s area of expertise has been part of ECU’s curriculum since its earliest days. The Carolyn Freeze Baynes School of Social Work and Criminal Justice Studies traces its roots to 1968 when the board of trustees established the School of Allied Health and Social Professions. The school received funding in 1970 and began admitting students in 1971.

Campus Living is committed to offering personal and affordable services, supporting the academic mission of the university, and providing opportunities for individual growth within a comfortable caring environment. A variety of living and dining options are available for students to choose. ECU has both suite style and traditional residence Halls located in three neighborhoods on campus. College Hill, Central, and West neighborhoods offer the convenience of living near classrooms, the library, recreational facilities, campus activities, and campus facilities. The university currently maintains fifteen residence halls that over 5,500 students call home. Residence hall amenities include beds, desks with chairs, chests or drawer space, window blinds, closet or wardrobe space for storage, Refrigerator and Microwave Combination Units, twenty-four-hour emergency maintenance services, study or lounge area and a vending area, cable, high speed internet, free online music services, laundry, and a wide range of educational and social programs, at no additional cost. Baths and showers located in each wing of the residence hall buildings. All rooms are Air Conditioned and Rooms in most halls are carpeted, and all halls feature other amenities.
