The department is located in a modern facility (health sciences west building) featuring dedicated classrooms, state of the art interviewing and counseling training rooms, and a vocational evaluation lab. Within the department space is also the center for Hispanic resources in rehabilitation and the addictions studies project. Two other externally funded projects, project enhance & the rehabilitation research initiative, are located in the rehab. Annex. Students enrolled in the department are exposed to a rich cultural experience. Due to the proximity of the university of Texas-pan American (UTPA) to the Texas-Mexico border (approximately 15 miles), most of the area residents speak fluent Spanish. In fact, approximately 90% of the UTPA student body self identifies as Mexican American.

Housing at the UTPA Residence Halls is available for UTPA students, faculty, staff, and participants of University- sponsored programs. Space in the residence halls is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The University Cafeteria, part of the University Center Complex, is conveniently located southeast of the Residence Halls. All residents must purchase the minimum required meal plan per semester. Each of the Residence Halls is designed in suite style, which is defined as two rooms sharing a bathroom. All rooms are furnished for double occupancy and may be reserved as private rooms in two of the residence halls as space permits. Residents are responsible for providing their own bed linen, blankets, towels, and toiletries. Room contents include: Single beds, desks and task chairs; Chests of drawers, built-in closets; Ethernet connections, TV cable service; Central heat and air. For convenience, the following services are provided: study rooms, TV lounges; computer labs, laundry facilities; snack and soft-drink vending; community kitchenette with microwave; recreation rooms (billiards, ping pong, foosball, game tables) and free student parking permit.
