This program mission is to provide the highest quality education, training, and practical experience in the study of design for all of the performing arts; To provide an educational environment that develops students' verbal and graphic communication abilities, knowledge, creative thinking, collaborative skills, and that promotes the investigation of new technology; To allow all students to explore and develop their personal design interest as it pertains to one or many specific design areas for a variety of arts disciplines. This program provides students with the opportunity to study design as it pertains to the performing arts. All PADP students complete a Department of Theatre core curriculum that examines the history, literature, design, and production of theatrical performance; they also complete a PADP core curriculum that emphasizes scenery, costuming, and lighting design for the stage.

Applicants for Admission to the Freshman class are required to have graduated or expected to graduate from an accredited high school before entering the University. Applicants are required to submit ACT scores. SAT scores are also accepted, although ACT scores are preferred. Students are urged to take the ACT/SAT near the end of their junior year or early in the senior year of high school. Students not able to take the ACT on a national date may take the Residual ACT through the University of Utah Testing Center. In addition, a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (173 on the computer-based exam or 61 on new iBT exam) is required. International applicants graduating from secondary schools outside the U.S. must have completed all requirements for graduation with satisfactory grades and must have received a diploma or certificate of graduation. In addition, applicants must be eligible for admission to a major University in the country in which they graduated. Applicants may be considered for admission if they have a minimum TOEFL score of 450 (133 on the computer-based exam or 45 on new iBT exam ) and are academically qualified.
