The School of Animal Sciences’ three basic missions are teaching, research and extension (Outreach). The school offers exceptional educational experiences in animal, dairy and poultry sciences at the undergraduate (BS) and graduate levels (MS and PhD). Graduate programs offer training in breeding and genetics, growth and metabolic physiology, dairy products, meat science and technology, ruminant and nonruminant nutrition, poultry physiology and nutrition, and reproductive physiology and biotechnology. Research is conducted with beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, and various laboratory species, as well as meat, eggs, and dairy products. Interactions of animal science faculty with scientists within the LSU Vet School, Pennington Biomedical Research Institute, and LAES Research Stations across the state provide a vast array of research opportunities for animal sciences undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty with appointments in the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service coordinates programs along with agents in Louisiana’s 64 parishes (counties). Educational opportunities offered through these offices include online and in-person classes, seminars, workshops, field days, publications and news releases.

LSU has 17 residence halls with architectural styles ranging from a Renaissance style typical of the new Residential College Complex and the older core of the campus, to the modern style typical of the halls along Campus Lake. Residence hall rooms can generally be described in one of two ways. Traditional rooms, most common among the older halls, are usually large with high ceilings and free-standing furniture that student can arrange as they desire. All rooms are air-conditioned with window units in each room. Modern rooms, common in newer halls with central air-conditioning, are more compact but maximize living space by using built-in furniture. Smoking is not permitted in rooms or any other areas in the residence halls. East and West Campus Apartments provide state-of-the-art accommodations, including private rooms with telephone service, basic cable TV, in room data connections, washer/dryer combinations, and full size kitchens with microwave ovens and garbage disposals. Each apartment has attractively furnished living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. In the Power Activity Building students will find additional study space, activities, programs, a TV lounge, email work stations, and professional and student staff to provide assistance as needed.
