Uraian Tempat

Chemistry has been offered by the University of California since its founding in 1868, and the College of Chemistry was created as a unit within the University in 1872. It was housed along with the other sciences in South Hall, the first building to be completed on the Berkeley campus. In 1890 a handsome brick building was constructed for the College on what is now the site of Hildebrand Hall. In time it came to be known as "The Old Chemistry Building," and when it finally fell to the wrecker's ball to make room for more modern facilities in 1966, its cupola was preserved. The cupola now decorates the chemistry plaza. The College Complex consists of six buildings surrounding a central plaza that house facilities for instruction, research, and administration as well as the chemistry library, shops, analytical services, and an instructional computer facility. In addition, the college uses adjacent Pimentel Hall for lectures and is strongly associated with research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, located on the hill above the campus. The new Stanley Building, opening this year, will house about 40 research groups from many campus departments, including chemistry and chemical engineering, all working in the health sciences.

Students can live in the home at Cal which will be an important part of their college experience. Any students may apply for residence halls. Virtually all rooms are double and triple occupancy, and the few single rooms are reserved for disabled students or continuing, upper-division students only. The halls are: Clark Kerr Campus, Foothill, Bowles, Stern, Unit 1, Unit 2, TUD Wada Apartments and Unit 3. Residents make a pact with their peers to keep the community free of smoke, alcohol, and drugs. They plan and host substance-free programming, events, and activities. The Disabled Students' Program (DSP) on campus can assist students with disabilities in securing priority for housing. Some residence hall rooms on the Berkeley campus have been modified for physically disabled, deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired students. In order to qualify for priority housing and receive the appropriate accommodations, students must provide DSP with verification of their disabilities. In addition there are upper division undergraduate apartment advising: Channing-Bowditch Apartments in which 226 students and 3 staff will live-in. It is for single gender with 4 bedroom or 2 bedroom and townhouse apartments. Wada Apartments in which 175 students and 1 staff will live in. It is for double and triple single gender apartments; and its only for academic year contracts; these are on the same schedule as Residence Halls.
