This program focuses on the structure and behavior of atoms and molecules, the composition and properties of both natural and synthesized compounds, the reactions between substances and associated energy changes, and the fundamental laws that unite these phenomena into a comprehensive system. The field influences nearly every aspect of contemporary life, so chemists are in very high demand. USP’s program provides the foundation for students to enter any number of career fields, as well as to proceed on to graduate or professional school. As chemistry majors, students will spend their first two years taking foundation courses in the basics of chemistry and organic chemistry, along with biology, mathematics and physics. In their final two years, they will take a combination of required and advanced elective courses, enabling them to focus their training in an area of chemistry of particular interest, and have the opportunity to engage in independent research under the guidance of a faculty member. In addition, students will complete the General Education Curriculum, a collection of interdisciplinary, humanities and social sciences courses that enhance critical writing and speaking skills and add breadth to their educational experience.

University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is a private, comprehensive, coeducational university founded in 1821 as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first school of pharmacy in North America. USP is located in University City, one of Philadelphia’s most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods. Located just west of Center City Philadelphia, the area is a hotbed of education, science, medicine, research, and culture and a home to nearly 45,000 students who attend one of the six colleges and universities located here. Nestled in the heart of University City is USP’s campus. Bordered by the neighborhood’s stately, tree-lined streets and sitting adjacent to sprawling, picturesque Clark Park, the campus is the perfect setting for USP’s close-knit community of scholars of all ages. USP’s 18 buildings sit on 25 acres. They comprise both historic structures and modern facilities, including more than 100 state-of-the-art laboratories, the leading-edge McNeil Science and Technology Center, five residence halls, and the Athletic/Recreation Center, a center of USP’s student life. In USP’s thriving campus it has the perfect mix of curriculum and community.

Living on campus allows students to fully immerse themselves into the collegiate experience. Three traditional residence halls and three apartment style residence halls offer students a variety of living environments to choose from. Each building is staffed by USP resident advisors who provide mentoring and lead programming to immerse them into campus life. The buildings are monitored 24/7 by staff dedicated to their safety. Traditional residence halls at USP have rooms and/or suites that are fully furnished, with their own air-conditioning and heating units. Each residence hall also provides plenty of room to live and study, with computer labs, laundry facilities, TV lounges, game rooms, and vending machines. All non-commuting, first- and second-year students under the age of 21 are required to live in on-campus housing. Residents have the opportunity to become involved in dynamic programs designed to raise familiarity with USP's community. USP offers three apartment communities where second-year students and above can reside. Apartments are furnished and designed to help students prepare to live off campus. The new international to home-cooked dining options offer savory selections in locations all over campus.
