The department of mathematics, computer and information sciences values and promotes excellence in its central mission of teaching and encourages and supports the creation and nurturing of an atmosphere where major offerings and service courses are designed to train mathematicians, computer scientists, and other students for entry into careers in business, industry, research, and education. It is dedicated to assisting all students, including those who are accelerated, those with adequate prior preparation and those who are educationally disadvantaged. Additionally, the department assists students in achieving professional and occupational competencies and in developing the computational skills and levels of literacy necessary for earning a living or for success in graduate or professional schools.

Accommodation is available for female students in the following residence halls: Clara T. Reed Residence hall (Honor Students), College hall I (freshman), Edna Horton Residence hall (juniors), Magnolia Residence hall (freshman and sophomores), Mapluma Ratcliff Residence hall (seniors). The male students are accommodated in the following residence halls: College Hall II (honor students), Curtis Maddox Residence hall (All Students), John A. James residence hall (freshman), Leflore hall (juniors), William J. Stewart Residence hall (sophomores). Facilities that are available in the residence halls are: computer labs, study rooms, snack rooms, network (Internet access), telephone and cable television hookups in each room, lobbies with big screen cable television viewing and comfortable seating for social and educational needs. Also each room is furnished with beds, desks, dressers and chairs.
