This program allows students with superior academic records to use up to nine graduate credits toward the B.S. and M.S. requirements. In essence, those nine credits count toward two goals simultaneously. Normally, it would take six years to complete two separate degrees. With the combined B.S./M.S. program, there is only a five year commitment (10 semesters). The advantage of the combined program is that the M.S. degree can be earned in less time, thus costing less money, than required by the traditional course of study. In the first semester of the senior year, students in the B.S./M.S. program may take up to six graduate credits. In the second semester of the senior year, they become enrolled as graduate students, and continue on as graduate students during the fifth year. Because students in this program only need to earn 111 undergraduate credits, they are usually finished with undergraduate coursework by the first semester of their senior year. If needed, they may continue to take some undergraduate courses after they become graduate students.

Students must hold a bachelors degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applicants whose first or native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to matriculation. To be considered for admission; an applicant must present an acceptable score on the TOEFL or IELTS test. They should have obtained a minimum score of 550 on paper based test; 213 on computer based test and; 80 on internet based test. An overall score of at least 6.5 with no sub-section below 6 is required on the International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS).

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics provides a unified home for the mathematical sciences. It is now the only such comprehensive mathematical sciences department among U.S. universities. It has 20 full-time faculty plus 15 adjunct faculty with primary appointments in other Stony Brook departments or in federal and industrial research laboratories.

Stony Brook University has largest residential campus, offering 26 residence halls. The residence halls called quads are conveniently located on different parts of the campus. There are two types of residence halls to choose from: Corridor Style : In corridor style buildings, a community of approximately 30 residents live in double or single bedrooms along a corridor, sharing a common bath and shower area, lounge area, and a kitchen. Many residents prefer to live in these buildings due to the social nature of the halls. Suite Style: In suite style buildings, four or six residents of the same gender share two or three bedrooms, a private bathroom, and living or dining area. There are two types of Suites: cooking, and non-cooking. The common rooms in cooking suits are furnished with dining tables, chairs, and cooking facilities; common rooms in non-cooking suits are furnished with couches and end tables. As a general rule, incoming students are placed in residence halls based on their college of interest. All rooms come furnished with an extra long twin bed, desk, chair, dresser, and bookcase for each resident, have high-speed access to the Internet, and are equipped with state of the art phone systems featuring digital phone mail, conference calling, and call forwarding. A cable access connection in each room provides Cablevision’s premium service. On single gender floors, residents share common bath and shower areas. Each quad has its own fitness center featuring Nautilus and Cybex equipment. Some fitness centers offer aerobics classes, and all are staffed by trained students who can provide assistance.
