Students must take at least one course in four of five general areas: ancient Mediterranean, Western Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, 18th-20th century, non-Western and 21 points in Visual Arts covering. International students whose native language is not in English should have the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 600 on paper-based test, 250 on old computer-based test or 100 on new Internet-based test, and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 7.0 is required for admission.

Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights. Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting path breaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. In 1897, the university moved from Forty-Ninth Street and Madison Avenue, where it had stood for fifty years, to its present location on Morningside Heights at 116th Street and Broadway. The Columbia campus comprises the largest single collection of McKim, Mead and White buildings in existence. The architectural centerpiece of the campus is Low Memorial Library, named in honor of Seth Low's father. The building today houses the University's central administration offices and the visitors center. To the north of Low Library stands Pupin Hall, which in 1966 was designated a national historic landmark in recognition of the atomic research undertaken there by Columbia's scientists beginning in 1925. Among the most impressive are the Sherman Fairchild Center for the Life Sciences and the Morris A. Schapiro Center for Engineering and Physical Science Research. The Presbyterian Hospital opened the Milstein Hospital Building, a 745-bed facility that incorporates the very latest advances in medical technology and patient care. In addition to its New York City campuses, Columbia has two facilities outside of Manhattan. Nevis Laboratories, established in 1947, is Columbia's primary center for the study of high-energy experimental particle and nuclear physics.

Columbia University Housing Services provide housing facilities for approximately 5,200 undergraduate students. 94 percent of all undergraduates and 99 percent of all first-year students live in residence halls. There are 17 undergraduate residence halls and 16 brownstones (which house 10 fraternities, 3 sororities, and 3 special interest communities) located on and around the Morningside campus. In addition, they also provide summer, conference, and guest accommodations. All first-year students are housed on South Lawn, the heart of undergraduate life at Columbia. Proximity to Butler Library, Alfred Lerner Hall, John Jay Dining Hall, Health Services, and the First Year/Sophomore Academic Advising Center make these residence halls convenient and have a connection to the Columbia community. Four different housing options are available to first years: Carman, Furnald, John Jay, and the all-class integrated Living Learning Center in Wallach and Hartley. Each hall has a unique set of features and benefits, from singles to corridor-style living. Room Selection for current students is an active process with many choices and options, including, but not limited to, living with friends in a suite or living alone in a single, air-conditioned room on a corridor. Laundry View is an Internet application that allows students to monitor the status of washers and dryers in connected laundry rooms through a Web browser. Laundry View was developed in response to requests for greater control over laundry activities. Since many people tend to do their laundry during similar time periods, it results in busy laundry rooms.
