In this combined degree program students will complete sixteen term courses. Ten of these will be courses in Music, including four would in early music, from the later middle ages through the baroque. The six remaining courses making up the renaissance studies portion of the degree will be broken down as follows: two terms of renaissance studies core course, four additional term courses be taken in at least disciplines outside of music such as literature, history, history of art, or religious studies.

Applicants need to have previous training in music theory or music history. They should also have samples of the previous work such as extended papers, advanced exercises, and analyses must be submitted. GRE General Test is required by the Graduate School. For applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants should have one hour of Renaissance Latin prose; two hours of Italian, one of sixteenth-century Italian prose, one of modern Italian scholarship. A third language (normally French or German) at the discretion of the Music Department is also required.
