Stanford is recognized as one of the world's leading universities. The renowned faculty offers students a remarkable range of academic pursuits that are paired with an extraordinary breadth of extracurricular activities and opportunities for research and public service. Today, Stanford has 1829 tenure-line faculty, senior fellows and center fellows at specified policy centers and institutes, and Medical Center-line faculty. Fifty-five percent of the faculty has earned tenure. Faculties at Stanford are expected to be among the best teachers and researchers in their fields. There are 403 faculty members appointed to endowed chairs. Twenty-seven Stanford faculties have won the Nobel Prize since the university's founding. Academic excellence is the primary criterion for admission, and the most important credential is the transcript. Stanford University libraries have amassed collections of books, journals, scores and printed reference works numbering more than 8.5 million volumes. There are nearly 1.5 million audiovisual materials, more than 75,000 current serials, thousands of digital resources and nearly 6 million microform holdings. Founded in 1925, Stanford University Press publishes about 130 books per year. Stanford houses one of the most extensive computing environments of any university. Services include email, web hosting, distributed file systems, wireless and remote Internet access, courseware and research and high-performance computing facilities. SUNet, the Stanford University Network, includes more than 150,000 computers with assigned Internet protocol addresses. Stanford is one of more than 200 universities connected to Internet2. The Stanford Medical Center includes the Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Hospital and Clinics and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

Stanford graduate residences offer living environments for students diverse in background, language, culture, race, and religion. Residences serve as focal points of intellectual, recreational, and social interchange. Through its residence program, Stanford seeks to provide graduate students with a supportive, friendly environment where they are encouraged to develop a strong sense of community. Student Housing Rates are approximate and subject to change. The single student housing rates reflect the charge per person. All rates include utilities (except telephone, cable and Ethernet). There is no difference in rates for furnished or unfurnished apartments of the same type. Residents are also required to pay a house dues fee each quarter/semester. House dues are used for educational programs, social activities, and other services that are not included in room rent. Dues range from $20-55 per term. The board rate in the co-ops is approximately $500 to $800 per quarter. Students are billed rent at a constant per diem rate for the full University calendar year (September 1-August 31). Quarterly and semestral rates are quoted in full monthly increments, but bill will be based on specific contract dates. There are many dining options available to graduate students. Students living in co-ops must purchase their house board plan and participate in the preparation of meals. Students living in other residences may choose to cook for themselves if living in apartments or if they have kitchen privileges at Crothers or Crothers Memorial Halls, eat at on-campus or nearby restaurants and snack bars, or purchase a meal plan offered by the University.
