This program highlights a range of increasingly complex issues--from shifts in cultural practices and racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity to the implications of these shifts for human or social development and education. Central to the concentration is research on the factors that put children or youth at a disadvantage, and those assets--family, community, or cultural--that support high levels of academic, social, and moral development; healthy individuals; and effective schools. The concentration prepares students to investigate these issues from multiple levels: the individual level; the school level and the neighborhood/community level in which schools are embedded; and the national and international levels, where cross-cultural concerns, including globalization, immigration, multiculturalism, and citizenship, are of paramount importance.

A bachelors degree or its equivalent, earned at a college or its equivalent either in the United States or overseas, is normally required for entrance to any of the graduate or professional schools. International students enrolled at Harvard University must be able to read English with ease, to understand rapid, idiomatic English as spoken in lectures and group discussions, and to express thoughts quickly and clearly in spoken and written English. A student who is not proficient in English at the time of application should not apply for admission. Applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an English-speaking university may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants should consult each individual school about test requirements and minimum acceptable scores.
