In this program students complete at least 44 required hours in Social Work and 42 required hours for the MSPH or 50 required hours for the MPH in Maternal and Child Health. The program includes the core courses required of all Master’s students in public health, and those required of all MSPH and MPH candidates, respectively, in the Department of MCH. Each Dual Degree student’s second year summer field placement focuses on social work in a public health setting with an emphasis on policy and program development and evaluation. The dual degrees are conferred in December following the second-year practicum since the field placement extends into the fall semester.

Applicant must have a bachelor's degree (based on a four-year curriculum) completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited institution an average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0) or better. Along with these minimal requirements, admission decisions are based on a number of factors, including academic degrees and record, written statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, test scores, and relevant work experience. For international student must submit acceptable, TOEFL scores.

The Department of Maternal and Child Health was founded in 1950 and it is one of the world’s leading academic departments for MCH research, teaching and practice. The department is dedicated to improving the health of women, children and families domestically and globally. The teaching program provides students with broad exposures to MCH population needs and priorities domestically and globally and the skills needed to become MCH leaders of tomorrow. Faculty represents a rich mix of academic backgrounds and interests, contributing expertise and leadership in a wide range of MCH disciplines.

The university provides on-campus housing in residence halls and the students can take full advantage of the exciting academic, cultural, and social events right at the heart of campus. Students who live on campus are more likely to interact with professors outside of the classroom, attend cultural programs, and participate in clubs and organizations. Suite-style housing is the most common, featuring either two or four rooms (each with two students) in the suite, and the students share the suite bathroom. Smaller residence halls feature a more traditional corridor-style facility, with rooms on each side of the hallway, and students share a common bathroom. Each Carolina residence hall offers quiet study lounges, kitchens, vending areas, postal service, front desk services, local telephone lines, and easy access to computer labs and laundry facilities. All rooms are wired for the Internet and cable TV, and wireless networks are available in several residences. Rooms are typically shared by two students, come furnished with beds, dressers, desks, chairs, and window coverings. Many students bring their own televisions, microwaves, mini-refrigerators, stereos, and other electronics. The Residence halls are located along Stadium Drive and on the northern part of campus are just five minutes from most classes, libraries, Lenoir dining hall, and Franklin Street. Campus bus transportation is free to Carolina students and conveniently makes frequent stops throughout campus. All Carolina residence halls are now smoke-free. Substance-free rooms are also offered in residence halls throughout campus for students who want to live in a community where the use of substances, such as alcohol, is not permitted.
