This program goal is to train students to be well qualified to compete for the diverse job opportunities available within the student's major interest area. This requires a mixture of general training and specific training adapted to the individual student's needs and desires. Because animal science involves a combination of many allied disciplines, including chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, genetics, and statistics, the types of programs available to students are flexible but of equally high quality regardless of the direction of effort. It offers concentrations in animal nutrition, functional genomics, animal physiology, and animal health and well-being. Environmental and management stressors to which livestock are exposed account for tremendous losses annually to livestock producers throughout the United States. Developing effective management systems and/or intervention strategies to help animals cope with negative effects of these stressors on health and production requires a thorough understanding of biological responses to these stressors. Research interests are directed at examining circulating levels of specific blood constituents recognized as key players in an animals' biological response to stress. Measures of behavioral responses have been incorporated into studies to more fully understand cause and effect relationships involved in compromised animal well-being.

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency. A foreign degree must be equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree and must be accredited by its regional or national accreditation agency. Applicants must have earned a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or other equivalent to a 'B' average. If student have completed previous graduate course work, they must have a grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or equivalent. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take and pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Passing marks are 550 for paper-based test, 213 for computer-based test or 80 for internet-based test (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in each sub-section. Passing marks for the IELTS are 6.5. Official scores must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service.
