Uraian Tempat

The idea for George Mason University was born in 1949 when the Northern Virginia University Center, essentially an adult-education extension of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, opened under the direction of John Norville Gibson Finley. In 1955 and again in 1956, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and Virginia legislature authorized the establishment of a two-year branch college to serve Northern Virginia. The university’s formal history began in 1957 as University College, the Northern Virginia branch of the University of Virginia, offering courses in engineering and the liberal arts. It opened in a renovated elementary school in the Bailey’s Crossroads area with an enrollment of 17 students. George Mason University is recognized as one of the most multicultural university campuses in the United States. With students from more than 135 countries along with faculty and staff members from across the globe, Mason is proud to provide a welcoming place to live, learn, work, and study. The university’s growing reputation as an innovative educational leader is rooted in Virginia’s strong educational tradition. By emphasizing high technology, public policy, and the fine and performing arts, Mason has created a curriculum and mission to meet the needs of Northern Virginia’s extraordinary cosmopolitan constituency.

The University offers five on-campus housing areas accommodating almost 5000 residents in a variety of traditional, suite and apartment style living environments. Presidents Park houses over 1100 first-year students in 12 residence halls. All rooms are furnished with beds, desks, chairs, dressers and closets. Carpets and window treatments are provided. Each floor community is composed of about 28-40 residents, who reside in double, triple, or quad rooms and shared common bathrooms. Presidents Park is a non-smoking and alcohol free housing area. The DUCC Housing Area provides two types of living options with traditional-style housing in University Commons and suite-sytle housing in Dominion and Commonwealth Halls. The TAP Housing Area provides two types of apartment-style living options to over 600 upperclass residents in Townhouses and Student Apartments. There are 34 two-bedroom townhouses, each accommodating four residents. The townhouses include a living/dining room, full-sized kitchen, two full bathrooms, small patio/porch, washer and dryer, and full furnishings. This complex houses upperclass residents, and is the campus housing area most like an independent living situation. The YRC Housing Area provides apartment-style living to upperclass students in Liberty Square and Potomac Heights. Chesapeake is the newest residential neighborhood which opened in phases from August 2007 through May 2008. It consists of a variety of unit types and accommodates 1032 students in five residential buildings, each with an elevator. As a predominantly sophomore area, the units consist of mainly single and double bedrooms with shared bathrooms (generally 4 students per bathroom). Group living areas and study lounges are located throughout the buildings.
