The program cover topics ranging from groundwater flow to volcanology, earthquake seismology, plate tectonics, geochemistry and paleontology. All doctoral students must successfully complete the candidacy examination, usually following completion of most or all required course work. The examination consists of two to three written exams, with the possibility of an oral follow-up exam if the written examination results do not justify an unconditional pass. The Examination Committee will consist of 3-5 faculty members. Normally, a majority of these (including the advisor) will be specialists in areas closely related to that of the proposed dissertation and will serve as the core of the Dissertation Committee. This Committee is nominated by the student in consultation with the advisor, and is subject to the approval of the Graduate School and the Graduate Committee prior to the candidacy examination.

Persyaratan masuk bagi mahasiswa internasional

Applicant should have a baccalaureate or master’s degree in geology or environmental geosciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, geography, mathematics, physics, or soil science from an accredited college or university is eligible to apply for admission. Students entering the Ph.D. program with a Master's degree will have an interview with a faculty committee during their first or second semester. This interview will assist the advisor and student in preparation of a program of courses. Students entering the Ph.D. program with a B.S. or B.A. degree who do not elect completion of a master's thesis must take the non-thesis M.S. comprehensive examination in the semester in which they complete 30 hours of graduate study. Applicants must have the approval of the department in which they plan to major and either must have a minimum 2.75 overall grade point average (GPA), based on a 4.00 system, in their baccalaureate program or must have completed 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.20 or higher. An applicant whose native language is not English must present a TOEFL score of at least 213 on the scale of 0-300, or at least 550 on the older scale of 310-677 where applicable (in certain countries). The score must be for an examination administered no more than 24 months prior to the beginning of the academic term for which admission is sought.
