This program is offered to students who show promise as outstanding researchers and master teachers of music. The degree is awarded to candidates who complete the course of study with distinction, demonstrating outstanding ability in original research, scholarly study, and excellence in teaching.

Students should have an appropriate master's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (out of 4.00) on all graduate and undergraduate work. An acceptable score (combined verbal/quantitative) on the GRE is also required. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) test scores are required of any student whose native language is not English. A TOEFL score of 550 on the paper based exam, 213 on the computer-based exam, or 79 on the internet-based exam or better is required for admission. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is required for admission.

The School of Music offers its students one of the nation’s most comprehensive programs, including their choice of three undergraduate degrees, three graduate degrees, and countless opportunities. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1931, the program includes approximately 70 faculty and staff members, 300 undergraduates, and 150 graduate students. Divisions include academic studies, bands, ensembles and conducting, instrumental, keyboard, music education, and voice/opera.

LSU has 17 residence halls with architectural styles ranging from a Renaissance style typical of the new Residential College Complex and the older core of the campus, to the modern style typical of the halls along Campus Lake. Residence hall rooms can generally be described in one of two ways. Traditional rooms, most common among the older halls, are usually large with high ceilings and free-standing furniture that student can arrange as they desire. All rooms are air-conditioned with window units in each room. Modern rooms, common in newer halls with central air-conditioning, are more compact but maximize living space by using built-in furniture. Smoking is not permitted in rooms or any other areas in the residence halls. East and West Campus Apartments provide state-of-the-art accommodations, including private rooms with telephone service, basic cable TV, in room data connections, washer/dryer combinations, and full size kitchens with microwave ovens and garbage disposals. Each apartment has attractively furnished living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. In the Power Activity Building students will find additional study space, activities, programs, a TV lounge, email work stations, and professional and student staff to provide assistance as needed.
