Ringkasan program
This program combines course-work with independent research. A range of courses is offered with topics that vary in response to the current interests and needs of the graduate students. While course work is an efficient way to convey knowledge, much of the graduate-level instruction occurs through one-on-one interactions with the faculty. The goal of this program is to prepare students for careers in academia, applied research, employment with state and federal agencies, and positions with private consulting organizations. It emphasizes original research in an area of expertise under the guidance of a faculty advisor within the department. Students may pursue independent research in a wide range of fields that include geochemistry, geophysics, geobiology, geomechanics, geodesy, ice physics, geomorphology, neotectonics, petrology, volcanology, paleontology, paleopedology, seismology, tectonics, stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, and ore deposits. The department has excellent analytical and other research facilities for studies in these sub disciplines, and the volcanic and metamorphic terrane of the Northwest offers unsurpassed opportunities for field studies. Active research programs are diverse and include studies of eruption dynamics, magma volatile inventories, and magma rheology; experimental studies of igneous phase equilibria and trace element partitioning; calculations of multicomponent equilibria in aqueous systems and volcanic gases; and studies of igneous protogenesis.
