This program is designed for students who want scientific training in the multi-disciplinary field of building systems. The focus of this concentration is broadly on building systems but encompasses specialized training in fields such as green building, structural timber design, energy systems, material strength modeling and management/marketing of building materials. The diverse nature of the concentration is intended to allow students from different backgrounds to shape their own education.

Students must have completed bachelor's degrees or the equivalent from any college or university of recognized standing. They should possess a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 grading scale and the GRE scores. Applicants, whose native language is not English, including those from India and the People's Republic of China, must demonstrate English language proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 550 or above on paper based test, 213 or above on computer based test and 80 or above on internet based test.

The College of Natural Sciences (CNS) is both the newest and the oldest college at UMass Amherst. Established in 2009, the college unites the life, environmental, computational, and physical sciences, and mathematics on campus. With origins dating back to 1863, when the Massachusetts Agricultural College was established, CNS also serves the university’s land grant mission for the citizens of Massachusetts and the nation. CNS is a central nucleus of science education and research at UMass Amherst, with 15 departments, the Stockbridge School, four popular interdisciplinary graduate programs, and 6,000 undergraduates. CNS is the largest recipient of grant funding on campus, and its 400 tenure-track faculty members are awarded two-thirds of total academic research grants. CNS strengths include cutting-edge research, top-ranked academic programs, award-winning and internationally recognized faculty, multidisciplinary and cross-departmental education and research initiatives, long-standing industry and government affiliations, noteworthy academic advising, valued outreach efforts, and dedicated alumni. UMass Amherst is building a comprehensive science complex on campus. The first building in the complex, the newly completed Integrated Sciences Building, houses 87,000 square feet of new teaching and research labs that integrate the life and chemical sciences. Initial designs are in place for the New Laboratory Science Building, with construction for phases one and two to start in the fall of 2009. Currently, renovations are underway on several existing campus buildings, including Lederle Graduate Research Tower, Goessmann, and Morrill. In addition, a study will assess the feasibility for a new academic building, which would contain classrooms and faculty offices. A range of CNS shared core facilities may be utilized by off-campus researchers.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst provides on-campus, off-campus and family housing. UMass Amherst residence halls provide forty-five residence halls and four apartment buildings that are grouped into six separate and very different residential areas: Central, Northeast, Orchard Hill, Southwest, Sylvan and North. Each hall possesses its own distinctive characteristics, inspired in part by location, architecture, and by the different cultural or academic living/learning programs housed within. Each residential area houses classrooms, recreational and social centers, kitchenettes, and cultural centers. The dining program provides students, faculty and staff with an array of dining options, ranging from self-serve buffet style programs in residential locations to retail dining and the finest in catering. All freshman and sophomores living in the residence halls are required to purchase one of the three residential meal plans. All other students may select any of the residential meal plans. Family Housing offers twelve studio apartments located in Lincoln Apartments offering total 185 one-bedroom and 124 two-bedroom apartments, which are all located in either Lincoln or North Village. Family Housing also has twelve one-bedroom apartments modified for the physically disabled. There are ten furnished one-bedroom apartments in Lincoln, which can be rented for an additional fee. To be eligible to live in Family Housing, students must be married, in a domestic partnership.
